Educational Visits Team

The Essex Educational Visits Support Team delivers the statutory employer responsibilities for advice, guidance and training to ensure all visits beyond the school gate are managed safely and meet national health and safety standards.

The Essex Educational Visits support team ensure visits are recorded, monitored and approved online by either the establishment's educational visits co-ordinator (EVC) or head and for higher risk visits, by the local authority (LA) educational visits adviser. The support is administered via EVOLVE, an online approval system, advice and guidance through our helpdesk as well as national guidance via the OEAP website.

Legal duty of employers Under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and associated regulations, employers must ensure that employees are provided with appropriate: guidance, training, access to further competent advice.

Responsibility for Health, Safety and Welfare

The employer retains overall responsibility for health, safety and welfare: The LA is the employer in LA maintained schools (community and VC), statutory youth service, looked after children and other LA services/settings. The governing body/trustees/owners are the employer in foundation, VA, academies free and independent schools.

Employers have overall responsibility but will delegate most visit approval to heads as they know the visit leaders and young people.
The essex educational visits support service supports the school to ensure these responsibilities are met, staff are trained and competencies are developed and recorded.
