Invitation to Apply for 2017 Hanban/British Council China Bridge

Essex-Jiangsu Centre for Chinese Studies would like to invite Essex school leaders and heads of languages to apply for the 2017 Hanban/British Council China Bridge trip to China on the 28 October - 5 November 2017. (Hanban is China's official public institution for Chinese Language).

Why apply?

Successful applicants will be offered a place on a week’s funded visit to China, hosted in different areas of China. Successful Essex schools will be hosted in Jiangsu Province, which has been officially twinned with Essex for 28 years, and will be linked with a school in Jiangsu where possible.

Taking part in this trip will allow you to:

  • link up and communicate with a school in China before the trip
  • visit your Chinese partner school to develop the link
  • encourage the teaching and learning of Mandarin and Chinese culture at your school
  • increase your networks and invest in your own professional development
  • gain support from Hanban/British Council and Essex-Jiangsu Centre for Chinese Studies

We at the Essex-Jiangsu Centre have helped many Essex schools take part in similar trips, which have been found to be extremely beneficial to schools and its staff’s professional development. Beyond trips, we help schools to further develop their links with China and the teaching of Mandarin.

What are the costs?

Accommodation and expenses in China will be covered by Hanban, with schools paying for their own international flights and visas.

Who can apply?

  • headteachers or deputy headteachers
  • department heads of languages
  • representatives from local authorities or organisations that promote foreign language teaching or international education

N.B. A maximum of two applications will be considered from the same school or organisation.

Please recommend others from your school if you have participated in China Bridge visits previously as, unfortunately, Hanban and the British Council do not accept repeat applications.

Hanban and British Council accept applications from schools that are starting to teach Mandarin or have a genuine intention to do so and preferably do not have an existing link with a school in China.

How to Apply:

To apply, please complete the application form and email it to iepwales@britishcouncil.orgcc’ing in The deadline for applications is Friday 23 June at 12:00 midday.

Hanban and British Council will notify the outcome of application. Essex-Jiangsu Centre for Chinese Studies will liaise with Hanban and the British Council to coordinate and support the group of Essex schools before, during and after the visit.

Successful applicants will be invited to take part in a pre-departure briefing in London the week commencing 2 October 2017.
